Guardian Kempo Academy

The Next Guardian Kempo

Massive changes are coming to Guardian Kempo. Originally, it was expected that the next Guardian Kempo Academy might start in 2005. Now it appears there will be no new Guardian Kempo groups until 2007 at the earliest. The next Guardian Kempo will require 2 to 6 years of Guardian Karate, 2 to 6 years of Guardian Jujitsu, and 1 to 6 years of Guardian Kobujitsu to qualify. The qualifications for the program will be extensive, and the demands of the program will require an additional six years after starting, so a Guardian Kempo Black Belt will not take anywhere from 8 to 12 years to earn. Soke has some neat ideas for special rewards for students to who accomplish that achievement, but we'll have to see if he can figure out how to afford them.

The Current Guardian Kempo

The Guardian Kempo Academy is organized much like a college program. Classes meet twice a week in four month semesters (about 16 weeks). We have three trimesters a year, Spring, Summer and Fall. Classes are numbered according to year and trimester. The first digit stands for the year, and the last digit stands for the trimester. For instance, GK 203 would indicate second year, third trimester.

Guardian Kempo is a phenomenally complex art. Guardian Karate contains only a portion of its striking skills. Guardian Jujitsu contains only a portion of its grappling skills. Guardian Kobujitsu contains only a portion of its weapon skills. In each case, though, the subordinate arts spend far more time on the details, so any student of Guardian Kempo is strongly encouraged to avail himself or herself of the opportunity to train in the other programs. Guardian Kobukumite, in particular, is the only place a student can actually practice weapon fighting. Thus it is highly recommended that advanced students take those classes if and when that is possible.

This is the complete rank by rank list of all the moves and all the material in Old School Guardian Kempo. New School Guardian Kempo will be different. New School will work on a two-track 4 year cycle. The first four years will get you to Black Belt, and the second four years will get you to Third Degree Black Belt. The rank progression will be Blue, Advanced Blue, Green, Advanced Green, Brown, Advanced Brown, Black. Each rank will be 8 months long to Black Belt, and Shodan and Nidan will each be two years.
